Customer Review: Super Mario Bros. with training wheels

This past Christmas a family friend bought this game for our daughter. I have to admit I was a little skeptical; I'm an avid gamer and part-time amateur game reviewer for a fansite, so I've seen my share of gaming greats as well as lousy licensed titles. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to discover that this game was a clean, competent platformer that is great for the young kids that love these pets.
Zhu Zhu Pets is, in many respects, a classic Mario-style side-scrolling platformer. The game is played with the Wii remote held sideways, and in most levels, players run, jump, collect stuff, and head for the exit. (A few levels change things up with some side scrolling vehicle action.) There are six or so levels in each of the six worlds (in a sideways nod to Nintendo, they are named "Area 4-6") and each world has some different theme, whether it be a carnival or a mountain. There are some six "power-ups" in the game, and a few of them borrow shamelessly from the aforementioned Mario franchise: a superhero cape for flying, a spring for bouncing high into the air, and a pair of skis to facilitate easy travel over ice and snow.
The game is generally designed to make it easy for kids to play. There are no enemies that can kill you, only wild Zhu Zhu pets to chase down and capture. In only a couple of levels can a player actually "die" by falling down a pit and in those levels you automatically respawn nearby with no noticeable penalty. There is a drop-in / drop-out cooperative mode that is useful not only for family play, but also for adult help -- the camera follows Player 1 and will "drag" Player 2 along as Player 1 moves, so an adult can take the reins of Player 1, give the kid Player 2, and help them navigate a tricky sequence if necessary.
From a production standpoint, I have to say that the game is really cleanly designed. The graphics are colorful and vibrant, with all the different Zhu Zhu pets available as selectable characters. The opening narrator is admittedly a bit over the top, but kids love will love it and the catchy music that goes along with the game.
My only complaint is that the difficulty level does go awry in a couple of places. There is at least one level about midway through with a platforming sequence -- one with a rare bottomless pit -- that is so hard that it took me a good five minutes to finally survive it, and I've been playing platformers my whole life. On the other end of the spectrum, the racing levels feature opponents so slow that even a basically competent player should win.
Overall, though, this game is a really solid choice for a young kid who likes Zhu Zhu pets. It's got a lot of levels, a lot of Zhu Zhu pets, and a variety of platforming gameplay that will translate well into full-fledged Mario games as they get older. Recommended.
