Video Game Reviews of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08

Customer Review: Great Golf Video Game With Only Minor Annoyances
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been playing Tiger PGA 08 on the Wii for a couple hours nearly every day for the past 6 weeks, and hacking my way through the varied challenges in the "Tiger Challenge" portion of the "My Career" portion of the game.

Controlling straight drives, draws and fades reliably is tough, even though the control scheme is quite clear.

Chipping or pitching from just off the green takes a lot of finesse, and the game makes it unnecessarily difficult to judge the distance of the shot. Even though the on-screen representation shows a semi-swing, don't be fooled - you need to take a full swing to get 100% power.

Putting is so much less than it should be, with the wire frame representation and the running lights. EA should have taken that code and refined it so that green undulations were realistically represented. The wire frame representation was just lazy programming by EA, and the golf module in Wii Sports represents greens contours much, much better. Hopefully, EA will improve this in the next version.

One glitch which has been noted elsewhere occurs on the 2nd hole at East Lake. After each shot, the game will nearly 'grind to a halt', and the visuals on subsequent shots for both players will be obscured. Sometimes you need wait only a half minute for the game to clear, or it may be even worse. If you find the game stuck there, the only thing to do is to go to options (press the "+" button) and concede the hole.

What I do like about the game is how complete and deep it is. There is a LOT of game play here, and it's relatively realistic. Just going through one portion of the game - the dozens of Tiger Challenge events - with match, stroke, stableford, and even one-ball scoring can take a long, long, long time. And that doesn't even touch on the "PGA Tour" section, or the quick and simple "play now" option.

The real-life PGA & LPGA players are nice, but the quirks of the non-real players, such as "Meadow LeBlanc" - who makes Dharma Montgomery look normal - are absolutely great.

The commentary by Gary McCord and David Feherty is amusing, but can get annoying at times. Feherty doesn't always give the player the correct advice, so (just like in real life) one needs to take his advice with a grain of salt.

This is not only entertainment, but also a virtual trainer.

So although the game has a few issues, I love it and recommend it to anyone interested in the best video golf game currently available.

Customer Review: Control glitches ruin the experience
Summary: 2 Stars

Let me start by saying that I've played a few rounds of golf, but I am not a golfer.

That being said... This game is pretty fun, and in many ways is more like a "golf simulator" than others I've looked at. (Thanks to the Wiimote.)

But, there's a glitch with the wiimote capture, and it doesn't happen in any other games I have, so I know it's a software problem here. I'll be going along playing 9 holes, doing reasonably well, and all of a sudden, the game will strike the ball while I'm still in my backswing. That's right, a 3-wood shot for about 20 yards.

Sure, yeah, it's a game. But this is a game where every shot counts, literally, and having the software screw you up by what sometimes comes up to three shots on a single hole trying to recover from a control glitch will just totally ruin the entire game session.

Customer Review: I'm Hooked on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like the new Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08. It is such an improvement over the Wii Sports golf game that there is no comparison. The courses are very realistic as well as the characters. There are a lot of different game options and many courses to play. The only thing that I don't like about the game is that it will not usually let you put from the fringe of the green. It makes you chip, which is not nearly as accurate. I love the game and look forward to playing it whenever I get a chance.

Customer Review: Hubby LOVES this game!
Summary: 5 Stars

As usual, the Tiger Woods game of the year provides great graphics, colorful characters, and exciting challanges! My husband just loves playing this game with his buddies, and the kids sure seem to like it, too!

There are TONS of ways to make a unique character, and this is the first year that my husband has been able to create a character that actually seems to look like him! The kids all have different versions of either themselves, or who they'd imagine themselves to eventually be, or just a fun, quirky character that they find funny to watch and look at.

Our 10 year old is able to understand all parts of the game, including how to adjust her shot for wind speed and direction, so it's definitely a game that everyone in the family can play. The challenge of making par can sometimes be just exactly that...a challenge! This game isn't one that will be finished in the first day, or even the first week!

Overall, a great Wii game that I'm very happy to have bought! Since I don't play golf, I love being able to have some "momma time" every now and then and set the kids and hubby to playing this together!

Customer Review: Lots of Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

Tiger Woods 08 is lots of fun. You actually have to make a good swing to hit the ball well. The only two negatives I have found. You need to have time to play the game each time you want a little golf fix. There are few 15 minutes segments most take 1/2 hour or more. Sometimes you or the computer hit a bad shot and the game hangs up on a graphic and the game has to be rebooted losing all progress in that segment.
