Customer Review: Best Headset I've Tried Yet
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a long form review comparing the Logitech F540's to TurtleBeach x4 and x41 headphones I've owned. I received the F540s on January 13th 2011, and used them almost everyday up to the writing of this review.

So this will be the 3rd set of $100-$150 headphones I've purchased in the last 3 years. I did a lot of research on the Turtle Beach headphones and they were good for the price, but then I started to need voice chat on PS3 as my friends started getting PS3s. Thus the adventure begins.

HISTORY:
I originally purchased the TurtleBeach X4. They were great. Really good bass, great surround sound (full optical audio!) and comfortable design. The problem was that they were Xbox360 only. After some searching I found some info on the Amazon review forums about how to get them to work with a PS3, and they did! The problem was that they had to be wired. Not that big of a deal, but no one at the time was making a wireless headset with chat for PS3.

I sold them to a friend and upgraded to the TurtleBeach x41. Went from 5.1 to 7.1 and even lighter weight. Again really good sound, amazing surround response. Even easier to connect to my PS3, wired though. (If you have the x4/x41 I can help you get the voice chat to work with your PS3)

TURTLEBEACH CONS:
When game chat was on, there was a VERY noticeable hissing noise.

They TORE through batteries. I mean get a 20pk of AAA cuz you will need them.

Even if the indicator said the battery life was fine, sound would cut out or voice wouldn't work, thus requiring new batteries.

The dreaded popping sound eventually started to occurr during game play, whether it was connected to my Xbox or my PS3. (This is a known problem with the x4/x41)

If you walked away from the base station the popping noise became so unbearable that you had to remove the headphones or turn them off. (They're so light you forget them when you head to the kitchen for a snack)

Felt very cheap, I mean, it didn't feel like a solid product when you hold it in your hand.

Weren't designed to connect the PS3, but was cool that they could with some adjustments.

F540 BREAKDOWN:
Enter the Logitech F540.

The difference from the TurtleBeach's are apparent right away. They feel sturdy in your hand and seem like a solid design.

The ear wrap is very comfortable and actually dampens outside noise unlike the x4/x41.(Does start to push in a bit if you wear glasses and use them for a few hours)

They feel light on your head with good padding all around.

The bass response is heavy. Very nice, but with no adjustments.

Separate volume controls for game volume and voice chat are nice and easily accessible.

This has simulated surround sound and it works, but its not as precise as digital 5.1/7.1 surround.

This have a really good balanced top volume, but the x4/x41 were able to get louder.(Deafeningly loud)

Being able to switch inputs with a button on the headset itself is so sweet.

Boom mic mutes when flipped which is cool and my friends tell me the voice chat sounds better than my modified x4/x41.

I haven't played any full day sessions so I don't know about full charge to drain time, but I've only charge it once and I've used it for a few days now, so the battery is seeming to hold up nicely.

SETUP:
The base station is pretty easy to set up. If you have both a PS3 and a 360 like me you will need to check the manual for preferred setup. I have HDMI for my PS3 and HD Component for my 360. I had to borrow a SD RCA A/V cable for my PS3 and set it to use multiple outputs for audio (The ps3 can output audio from all cables that are connected to it. you lose some quality, but most people won't ever notice). Then connect the PS3 chat USB cable from the base station to your system and your're done.

For my 360 I had to use the RCA pass-through cables that came with the headphones. Attach them to the audio pair from the Component cables and all your sound is going where it was originally and also to the Base station.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
If you made it this far then like me you wanted to do a lot of research before spending good money on a set of gaming headphones. The Logitech F540s are by far the best gaming headset I've ever used. I'll gladly take the loss of digital surround sound for wireless PS3 chat and functionality. If you have both consoles then the Logitech F540 is the best completely wireless headset you can get for the money.
