Video Game Reviews of LEGO Star Wars III The Clone Wars 3DCustomer Review: LEGO Star Wars III for 3DS Summary: 4 Stars
I finally got around to beating LEGO Star Wars III earlier today, so here are some thoughts on the game for those who haven't picked it up yet. For reference, I'm someone who had never played a LEGO game before:
- First of all, I think it's important to throw out that I really enjoyed this game, and plan on finding 100% of the secret items.
- I think the game is fun, but mindless (in a relaxing way), and unfortunately easy. You have to swap between characters on the fly to solve puzzles, and if you don't quickly memorize what on screen signal goes with what kind of character, the game offers a hint for you to solve the puzzle. Still, while it was rather simple, there was also never a moment of frustration from not having any clue how to progress, and swapping characters was fluid enough to add to the fast-paced action of the game. Once you unlock all the different kinds of characters, if you simply destroy everything and "build" every pile of interactive LEGO pieces, you are essentially guaranteed to find every secret item.
- Although entertaining, ground combat is extremely simple as a Jedi/Sith, and somewhat unwieldy as a ranged character. As a Jedi/Sith, you can simply mash your attack button and you easily deflect all oncoming laser fire. As a ranged character, the automatic aiming system is just awkward enough to make both dodging shots and accurately returning fire at the same time a little difficult. Although some of my favorite characters are ranged, I never really found myself using them as much as the melee characters, as they were just so much more efficient and simple to control, no matter how much I wanted to run around as Boba Fett. The thing that I find the most disappointing about combat is that there is never any use of the Force to attack enemies directly; no force push, no force choke, no lightning bolts. You can time blocking blaster bolts to reflect them though, that's pretty sweet. There are not many different kinds of enemies, and I can see why people often complain that dispatching them becomes repetitive. It's always just a matter of cutting them down, blasting them, or using an environmental object (i.e., having a rock crush an enemy). Sometimes you have to do a special attack to drop their shields, and for as few Destroyer Droids as you see, it was really disappointing that several times you just can just one-shot them while they're in their rolling form.
- Air combat is awesome. It is fast paced, and while easy (the auto-target is a little ridiculous), it is totally sweet shooting rapidfire lasers at stuff and blowing it up. The 3D effect looks fantastic during air battles, and it has a rather Star Fox-ish feel.
- Lightsaber combat versus a Sith boss is probably the most awkward aspect of the game. I think that you can make it less awkward by blocking and doing these little standoff moves (i.e., clashing your sabers together and having to perform a mini- quick time event), but the game never really explained how to do so, so it was always just a really awkward button mashfest for a few seconds until the boss lost enough HP to trigger the next phase of the fight.
- There is essentially no penalty for dying. You go through the game collecting LEGO studs, which you can use to unlock secret characters through purchasing them (i.e., Yoda is 250,000 studs). When you die, you lose 1,000 studs... but you also drop a blue stud worth 1,000 studs. So, when you die, you almost immediately respawn in the same place and you can pick up that stud and therefore suffer no loss. What is more, is that once you unlock a stud bonus multiplier, you can actually gain bonus studs from dying. For example, if you have multiplier of x4, if you die and lose 1,000 studs, you can gain 4,000 from picking up the blue one you drop. Kinda weird. There are no game overs, and once I figured out how to play the game my only deaths came from missing jumps or standing unknowingly where the interactive environment was secretly ready to crush me (i.e., standing in the spot where you pull down a huge rock).
- There are 83 different characters to unlock, ranging from the original trilogy to the prequels, also including ones from the Clone Wars TV show that I had never seen before. Something very important to keep in mind is that if you're trying to unlock all of your favorite characters, to save a LOT of time, keep in mind that eventually you can unlock stud multipliers, so whereas in the beginning it took me FOREVER to save up enough studs to unlock, say, Jango Fett, eventually I had a 48x multiplier and was able to easily rack up millions of studs without even trying. In fact, the highest multiplier you can get (since they stack), mathematically would be x3840. Wow. In any case, once I unlocked some multipliers, I went very quickly from struggling to scrape together enough studs to afford a single character to simply buying out the entire store.
- It sucks that you can't save during mid mission, although I think that when I was replaying a mission I saw an option for "save and exit." Also, the game has frozen on me several times during gameplay, and several times during loading screens, which is not cool. Also, the loading times are a little excessive.
All in all, a pretty enjoyable game, although I hear the console versions are much better. I plan on finding 100% of the hidden items, although I'm not sure how much replayability it will have. It has several built in minigames that are a little interesting, but nothing fantastic (Droid volleyball, a snowball fight, a space battle versus starfighters [the best one], lightsaber baseball, tc.) The 3D is fairly subtle, and makes platforming a little tricky, but is a nice little addition. The game tries to be funny, and is pretty cute at times, like a particular gag at the very end of the game that I won't spoil, but other times not so much.
