Video Game Reviews of Mega Bloks Halo UNSC Warthog (colors and styles may vary)Customer Review: Not sure where the hate is coming from Summary: 4 Stars
I admit that I've been a fan of the Halo franchise, particularly on the gaming side but also a bit on the memorabilia as well. I really hadn't planned on purchasing any of these kits, but the negative reviews intrigued me so I picked up the Warthog kit locally just so I could try putting it together (it also didn't hurt that it was on sale for 25% off the regular retail price).
Frankly I don't know what the negative fuss and hatred is about. This kit went together without any more difficulty than any Lego set I've done in recent times. The plastics that Mega Bloks uses in their block molds isn't a good-looking as the polymers that Lego uses, but I didn't find that the friction-fit locking capability was really any worse (or better, for that matter) than any of the Lego City Construction sets I've done or any of the Star Wars sets that we've completed, or worse yet, some of the irritating Bionicle kits. There are some pieces in this kit that didn't fit snugly (particularly with the Covenant turret), but I've run into that same issue with the occasional specialty Lego moldings as well.
Overall I was pleased with the completed product (it took about 20 or so minutes to do, attention divided between it, watching the ball game and nursing a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale), enough so that I've even begun picking up the rest of the Mega Bloks Halo sets (including ordering a bunch here on Amazon a while back, including an unopened copy of this one), something that I really hadn't planned or budgeted for. But the end model was of a quality that I feel is good enough as block kits go that I suddenly have found that I can no longer help myself. Maybe for a young child this kit might be a bit much, but considering the ERSB rating of the typical Halo video game title, why are young kids even FAMILIAR with Halo in the first place?
Granted it's been a LONG time since I was 8 years old (the minimum age this kit is rated for), but I DO remember already building plastic model kits at about that age (an MPC '68 Camaro was my first one, followed shortly thereafter by all sorts of cars, planes and ships), albeit with a little assistance from Dad. That was well before the age of snap-together kits; this was the age of REAL glued-together sets. But that difficulty was actually part of the fun, and an activity that fostered connection between a boy and his father. If this kit is a bit too challenging for the little tyke, then lend a hand. If it's too challenging for even some of you older types...well, I guess that not everyone is mechanically inclined, or good with puzzles. For everyone else who's a fan of Halo memorabilia or building sets in general, I'd gladly recommend this kit.
