Wing Commander is a space flight simulator. The premise of the game is basically that the human race is waging war against an alien cat like race called the Kilrathi. You play a rookie pilot who by the end of the game (hopefully) has made a name for himself. While much of the game is spent completing missions, inbetween those missions you can spend time talking to your fellow teammates in the lounge area, checking out the kill board or getting a mission debriefing. The missions themselves vary from destroying all targets while traveling from one nav point to another to escorting friendlies. The mission view is that from the cockpit. Depending on what ship you are flying the view is different as are the weapons and shields available. You can also talk to your wingmen or taunt the enemy with certain commands. The controls take a bit of getting used to but after an hour or two you should feel right at home. The graphics and music are not that great unfortunately. The graphics are dark and not very detailed and the music is not that memorable. What will keep you playing though is the storyline and the challange. How you perform determines how the war goes. Fail too many objectives and your carrier, the Tiger Claw will be attacked. Complete the objectives and you'll take the war to the Kilrathi! Overall, the game is a lot of fun and is an excellent start to a great series.
Description of Wing Commander
Wing Commander, released in 1990 by Origin Systems, is a simulation style action game interwoven with a cinematic storyline set in the 27th century. In the first scenario, the player takes the role of a young Lieutenant who has just been assigned to the carrier ship Tiger's Claw, the pride of the Confederate Navy. As the primary goal of the game unfolds, you learn of the Confederation's campaign to take Vega Sector from the Kilrathi. What made this game so popular was that it didn't attempt to model real-world physics with a completely accurate simulation of space flight, but concentrated instead on providing a fun, intense, first-person space dogfighting experience. Several things distinguished it from other games upon its initial release: the graphics, music, and sound were all revolutionary, surpassing most (if not all) other competing products in the industry at the time.
