Video Game Reviews of Wireless Sensor Bar for Wii

Customer Review: Nice Sensor Bar
Summary: 4 Stars

I have wanted a wireless sensor for awhile now. I like the idea of being able to put it in a drawer when I am finished playing along with my Wii remotes.

The sensor is larger than the Nintendo sensor. I would say the Nyko sensor is slightly larger than two Nintendo sensors placed on top of each other. The Nyko sensor is definitely heavier especially with batteries.

The sensor works just as well as the Nintendo sensor. However, the vertical sensitivity is not as good as the Nintendo sensor. What I mean is if I hold the Wii remote at about chest level(I am 6'5" tall) the Wii remote cuts out as if I am not pointing at the TV. I never hold the remote that high though so it doesn't really matter.

The blue light is very annoying. So much that I placed a piece of black electrical tape with a little hole in it the size of a pin over the light. Now less light gets through and it is much better. I am serious when I say the light was annoying. My couch is fairly low to the ground and the sensor is just about eye level so the light was shining right into my eye balls.

The other annoying feature is the audible tone that sounds when the auto shut off is about to occur. I solved this by opening up the sensor and using a wire cutter to remove the little speaker. There are around 6-8 screws holding the sensor together and with a steady hand it wasn't difficult to do. Now the blue light will flash when the auto shut of is about to occur but I get no audible tone.

The auto off feature is a nice touch but would have been better with a 3 and 4 hour setting in addition to the 1 and 2 hour setting for people like me who tend to play in 3-4 hour shifts when my wife goes to bed ;)

I suggest using slow discharge rechargeable batteries like Duracell Pre-Charge AA NiMH batteries to keep battery costs down.

I gave the sensor a 4 out of 5 due to the Light being too bright and the audible tone that occurs when the auto shut off is about to occur. I feel since the blue light flashes when the auto shut off is about to occur there is no need for an annoying audible tone. I was able to fix both of these problems however and now it is nearly perfect. I would give a 4.5 out of 5 if it was possible.

Customer Review: Works flawlessly.

The wireless bar works as expected. The optional audible alarm is nice as I forget to turn it off about half the time. In my opinion, the only feature that could be improved is the bright, blue light on the front. I'd tone it down a bit.

To save yourself some money in the long run, buy some quality rechargeable batteries and a charger to use in the wireless bar, like the Maha PowerEX brand (get some for your wiimotes while you're at it and skip the cheapo "charging stations" that are out there).

Customer Review: Simple and easy to use

I have this and it works great. Main reason I bought it was to move the sensor closer to the Wii controllers since they act erratically around 12' or farther away from the Wii's sensor bar. I also didn't want a cable laying across the floor.

If you want to limit playtime, it has a timer with alarm which can be set for one or two hours.

Customer Review: Nice from afar, far from nice

I have a projector instead of a television, so all my wires, consoles, etc, are concentrated BEHIND the couch. This obviously caused some problems when I tried to run the OEM sensor bar (which doesn't actually sense anything) from behind the couch to the front wall. So instead of that hassle, I got this guy, and put some sticky velcro on the wall where I wanted it to stay. It worked great at first (even though the "works from up to 20 feet away" claim is a pure load of crap...try 10ft), but after about a week, it stopped registering a solid signal from very far away. Now I'm here, having bought it about a month ago, and I've gotta be standing 3 feet away from the wall if I want to point at anything on the screen; otherwise the signal on the wii-remote flickers like a strobe light (which, anyone who's played the thing knows, is downright useless). Honestly I wish I'd invested in an extension cable for the OEM sensor bar, since I can only assume the range on the wireless one will continue to get worse and worse as the batteries drain.

Customer Review: Functional yet practical?
Summary: 3 Stars

If you truly feel the need to have one more wireless device then I will admit that this sensor bar serves its purpose pretty well. However it proved to be quite impractical for me....

One key thing: FOUR batteries. Really? Battery powered devices saturate my life. GPS unit, two cameras, mp3 player, Wiimote, PS3 controller, Xbox controllers, Scene it controllers, TV and DVD remote, and the list goes on... It really is a battery nightmare which is why I see NO need to have 4 more batteries used on something that we don't even touch or move. There really is just no need for this to be wireless.

In a world where most everything we use has a wireless option, let's stick to keeping wireless where it will actually be useful such as remote controls and the such.

If you broke your original sensor bar, ponder for a moment if it is really worth having to keep FOUR "AA" batteries in use just so we can point our WiiMote at the TV. If it seems like a bit much for you as it did me, pick up an original sensor bar for less than $10 via Nintendo.com (http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=138704¤cy=USD&catalogId=10001&tranId=0&lastAction=setCurr&storeId=10001&languageId=-1&categoryId=62707&ddkey=http:SetCurrencyPreference)
