Customer Review: Solid sci-fi Nintendo action game

Metroid is a Nintendo game designed as a sci-fi adventure but in all actuality it's more of an action game. In adventure games you usually talk to people and collect items, so the label of this as an "adventure game" is sort of a misrepresentation. You go through six different areas: Tourian, Norfair, Brinstar, Ridley's Hideout, Kraid's Hideout, and Mother Brain's hideout. Most of the areas contain missile tanks and weapon upgrades. There is an abundance of missile tanks and weapon upgrades but the great thing about the game is that you don't have to get them all in order to beat the game. As a matter-of-fact, about a third of the missile tanks and weapon upgrades should be avoided in order to beat the game faster. Each weapon has their pros and cons. The Laser weapon is effective but very time-consuming to get since you have to get a missile tank and go all the way up Tourian area just to get it. The Wave Beam is powerful but the zig-zaggy motion of the weapon is frustrating since it can go underneath an enemy and not hit. The Ice Beam can freeze an enemy but takes more hits to take out an enemy. Still, this is the weapon you will need throughout the majority of the game and for the Mother Brain (final) area because it's the only effective weapon against the metroids in the area. The two best ways to beat Metroid is to either beat it in one day or complete an area, take down the password, and complete the next area some other time. The game takes about two to three hours to beat with the use of a map and notes. Truth be told, without the map of the six areas and knowing where the missile tanks and upgrades are, this game can be beyond frustrating. However, with the help of a map and a little useful note-taking (what to get and in what order), this game is fun and has replay value.
