You will not be disappointed. Don't wait for the price to drop. Buy it now. I won't write a long review, others have done a far better job than I could. It is a fun game and you will play it for a long time. Even when you are not playing, it is entertaining to watch your friends/children/spouse play.
Customer Review: Mario's latest adventure is a real mind-bender! Summary: 5 StarsThe premise of Super Mario Galaxy is the same as it always has been: complete a series of short mini-stages, collecting coins and stars along the way, then fight Bowser to rescue the princess. What's different this time is that your mission takes you across the Universe, and a few dozen small galaxies along the way. These galaxies are made up of tiny planets; and when I say tiny, I mean Mario can run the entire circumference of many worlds in a matter of seconds. The trick is that each planet has its own gravity field, so you can run upside-down and sideways without falling to your death.
The level designers make creative use of gravity throughout the game, so much so that you wonder how they were able to come up with some of the stages. Super Mario Galaxy forces you to change the way you think about space and perspective in games. Oftentimes if you are stuck, it's not because the enemies are too hard or the jumps are too tricky, but because you haven't looked at your situation from every possible angle.
This sounds pretty intimidating, but the game lets you take these challenges in bite-sized pieces. Once you've completed what you need to do on a planet, you can launch yourself to the next one, and so on until you get the star for that level. Despite all the gravity-bending gameplay, the levels are more or less linear. There is never any need to backtrack to previous planets--in fact, you can't go back once you've launched yourself. You continue facing one task at a time, always moving forward, until the end of the game. It's also worth mentioning that each of the 120 stars takes around 5 or 10 minutes to collect, and you always have a chance to save and quit before going after the next one. This allows you to fit in time to play without having to clear your schedule.
If you have even the tiniest affection for platforming games, then know that Super Mario Galaxy is the most epic, imaginative, enjoyable, and just plain best platformer ever made. It's always challenging without being punishingly difficult, the levels are epic in scale without being overwhelming, and the fun is long-lasting without forcing you to play for hours at a time.
Customer Review: Very fun game! Summary: 5 StarsGreat take on Mario. The game is long (which is awesome!). My son (4.5 yo) can't quite use the controls to play by himself, but the 2 player options allows him to help mom or dad play and feel like he is a part of the action.
Definitely would recommend this game to others!
Customer Review: My Choice For Game of the Year (Decade?) Summary: 5 StarsThis is my favorite game in recent memory.
When Super Mario Galaxy was first released, I was skeptical about purchasing it. I loved Super Mario 64 but I thought Super Mario Sunshine was familiar and gimmicky so I had priorly assumed that there wasn't any gas left in the Mario franchise tank. Boy was I wrong.
To summarize the game, it is at its core a collection of puzzles. The completion of each puzzle awards you with star. Collect enough stars, and you win the game.
It sounds mundane, but completing each individual puzzle and collecting the star has the charm of, say, completing a sudoku puzzle or the daily crossword. But unlike doing consecutive sudoku puzzles, the quests to earn each star in Mario Galaxy are so fantastically diverse and mind-bendingly innovative, you'll have a hard time putting your controller down. It stems from the absolutely brilliant and imaginative ways the designers used the gravity mechanic in the game - the direction of gravity is constantly changing, Mario will be flipping upside down, and you'll have a wonderful time manipulating the game.
I should address another issue that gave me pause before I bought the game. I had feared from the trailers and previews that either the game would merely involve jumping from tiny planet to tiny planet, killing one or two enemies on each one and collecting a few coins; or that the space setting would quickly grow tiresome (like the Sun-shiny settings of Sunshine before it). Fear not - true some levels involving blasting from small space object to small space object. But there is tremendous diversity from planet jumping puzzles (which are much more fun than I had anticipated) to large sprawling landscapes to explore much like in Super Mario 64. Further, traveling the different planets gives Mario the opportunity to visit diversely themed planets - such as your standard green grass settings to fire, ice, desert, water, volcano, etc. settings.
So in conclusion, if you were skeptical like me about Galaxy, let me assure you it is well worth trying out.
Customer Review: What a great game Summary: 5 StarsI'm not particularly a huge Mario fan and bought this for my son from the great reviews I read about it. I tried it out and was immediately hooked. What a fantastic game, completely lives up to the hype.
