I have heard many gripes about playing this game using the standard DC controller, and I totally agree. To play and enjoy this game, a DC mouse and the DC controller is the bare minimum!
I have played the online component of the game extensively, using my regular ISP (AT&T Worldnet) and the game runs amazingly well and is highly playable. Although I do wish that the DC Quake 3 would support more than 4 players per game, I believe that some online play is better than NO online play.
PC players may brag that ultimately, the PC version of Quake 3 runs faster, smoother, and at a higher resolution, but to reach that level of performance requires a very powerful and expensive home computer which most of us cannot afford.
Therefore, I highly recommend the DC quake 3. Sega has delivered on their promises of online gaming w/ the Dreamcast, and it is up to the DC owners to support Sega's endeavors by purchasing excellent online games such as this.
I find the framerate to be irritatingly slow. I would have much prefered that they dumb down the graghics some to yield a higher frame rate. It is interesting to note that in two player split screen mode (where the graphics aren't as polished and powerups appear as 2D icons) the framerate is noticably faster.
In the four player split screen mode things slow down a bit. If you are used to playing a good fps over a network (I play a lot of Counter Strike) it's hard to go back to this. I had a good time but the other players I was with wouldn't stop bitching about it.
The dreamcast controls, compared to a mouse, are very irritating. Basically, if somebody is shooting you in the back it takes way too long to turn around. The game would have been a lot more playable with the DC controllers if they had included a function or button combo that would have performed instant 180 degree spins. That would have changed everything. As it stands the limitations of the DC controller are endlessly irritating.
I have yet to spend much time playing against the bots but my impression so far is that with the DC controller you are too handicapped to compete effectively against them. The fact that they can turn instantly and you can't is grossly unfair.
To conclude, I can't afford to buy a computer that will run Quake III adequately so I am very pleased to have the game for my Dreamcast but I am disappointed with the framerate. Also inadequate steps were taken to make the DC controller effective so don't even think about not getting the mouse.
Personally, I can't wait for Phantasy Star Online, but this is a Quake 3 reveiw, and I will tell you, your money won't be waisted if you buy this game, it is truly awesome, and the lag is actually better than it is when I play this game on my PC! See you online.
