Customer Review: At under $40 this should be impossible to pass up

After playing Dreamcast at a friend's house a year ago I was encouraged to buy one for myself. I ended up purchasing a black sega sports dreamcast on ebay and have never looked back since. When I was a younger kid, I owned an N64 and PSone and I was constantly bashing sega and the Dreamcast. It is only now that I realize just how wrong I was to do so. The Dreamcast really could have(and should have) been something great. In recent years I have added a gamecube and playstation 2 to my lineup and I see dreamcast as a system that could have very well competed with these two and xbox as well. The graphics are almost on par with the ps2 and gc and thats really quite amazing considering it was released much earlier. The systems controller and the VMU memory card are very innovative and far beyond their time. This was the first console to feature online gaming too. The best part about dreamcast is its selection of games. Sonic adventure 1 & 2 are both excellent platformers. It's got great RPGS like Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online. All of the 2k sports games and virtua tennis were amazing for their time and even if they seem a little old now they can still be fun. For shooters we have Resident Evil and House of the Dead among others. The best games on dreamcast have got to be the fighters. The selection includes Street Fighter III and Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Soul Calibur which is quite possibly the greatest fighter ever made. I also cant leave out marvel vs capcom 1 and 2. One of my favorite games is Powerstone 2 which in my mind is even more fun that Super Smash Bros Melee on gamecube which I also own. The first powerstone game is also a lot of fun. Dreamcast also features a wide array of unique games like Crazy Taxi, Seaman, Jet Grind Radio, and of course the revolutionary Shenmue. Playing some games on Dreamcast for the first time years after its release (and sadly after its demise) makes me wonder if I had been sitting in a cave for the past 8 years! As someone who owns both gamecube and ps2 and who used to be a sega basher, I am telling you, this is the best value you will ever get for a system so cheap. Most of the games are relatively cheap and can be bought on sites like this one and auction sites like ebay. It is really sad that dreamcast isn't competing with ps2, gc, and xbox like it should be. Even if you own a more modern system, take it from me that dreamcast is every bit as "next-gen" as any one of those.Customer Review: What Could Have Been...

This was definitely a fun, great system to own. I got mine a few months after it came out and was instantly hooked on Sonic Adventure and couldn't put it down for months. It's just a shame the timing wasn't better (X-Box and PS2 came out later and blew Dreamcast out of the water) and more great games weren't released for it.
I recently put my Dreamcast up for sale, along with all the games and accessories and I'll definitely be sad to see it go. I'm a poor, starving college student so I need the money.

No one knew about this system. Everyone was hyped on n64 and playstation. I had the dreamcast and im glad i wasnt one of the people who didnt know about it. It was the greatest console until the ps2 - xbox came out. DC is even better than gamecube. This is
underdog system. The greatest controller and memory card of all time. The memory card was hot, it was placed in the controller. It's a shame they stopped making games for this.

After Sega failed with the Saturn, they tried again with the Dreamcast (codenamed Katana during development). It was released on Setember 9, 1999 on the US shores. It was, by far, the best 128-bit console. Ever.
Companies purposely tried to make the Dreamcast sell bad. For example, Squaresoft released Final Fantasy 8 the same day as the Dreamcast. And Sony told lies to the public about the PS2, to make it seem better, and then everyone started to think that nothing could surpass the PS2, and anything that is not PS2 sucks. The first run of Dreamcast games, such as Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure, had amazing graphics that surpassed the first run of PS2 games. But everyone was so entranced in Sony's lies that almost no one thought the Dreamcast existed. Dreamcast had anti-aliasing, which gets rid of jagged edges. PS2 didn't have anti-aliasing, and as a result, even the newest PS2 games look jagged. But people were still entranced to think PS2 was better.
The game selection was really good too. Resident Evil Code Veronica was originally on Dreamcast, until whiny PS2 fanboys started crying to Capcom and then they released Resident Evil Code Veronica on PS2.
Dreamcast games generally had fast load times, compared to PS2 games. The discs the Dreamcast used were GD-ROMS (GigaDisk-Read only memory), and the games could not be copied on to a computer without seriously messing with the disc.
To end my review:
It's not that I don't like PS2. In fact, it's one of my favorite consoles. But Sony didn't need to lie about the features to make Dreamcast fail. Dreamcast died in 2001, and the last game was published in February 2002. RIP Dreamcast. May your fanbase never cease to grow.
