Video Game Reviews of Gold's Gym Cardio Workout

Customer Review: Great workout, but some minor issues
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this for about 10 days now, and so far I like it a lot. I especially enjoy the shape boxing workout. It starts you off with a simple workout, jabs and crosses, and the workouts increase in intensity/duration and complexity the more you use it (by adding hooks, uppercuts, and other things I haven't gotten to yet). I find myself getting an excellent workout.
I'm not so crazy about some of the balance board applications. I'm a pretty big guy, big chest, shoulders. Trying to use the balance board to do pushups just wasn't working for me. Using the board requires me to keep my hands too close together for me to do comfortable pushups. I have just enough room on the balance board to put my feet shoulder's width apart to do squats. Some of the other exercises I just didn't care for, although I haven't unlocked all of them as of yet. But it's ok, because if I stick to the boxing exercises, and do some of the pushups, squats, other exercises on my own, it all works out.
I find kind of silly that you earn gold which can be used to buy shoes, gloves, shorts, etc. And a teddy bear? Not sure the point of that. Maybe as I progress further, the point of it will reveal itself.
Overall, I like it, I'm getting a good workout doing the cardio boxing (and I find it to be a better boxing workout than other ones I've seen, like on the Wii Fit), just some minor drawbacks.

Customer Review: I'd rather work out with traditional aerobic videos.
Summary: 2 Stars

In the boxing section, half of my punches weren't recorded because of the angle of my wiimote, or battery level or some technical difficulty. I still haven't figured out why they'd only be recorded half the time. I know how to throw a punch correctly, and I followed the directions and my battery was good.
In the squat section, the game records faster squats as better squats. If I wasn't fast enough in rising, the game didn't count a squat. In reality, slower squats burn more calories. And if I'm going to stand around waiting for a command, why not be burning calories in the squat? The pace between commands and active work such as between squats was incredibly slow.
There's a lot of standing around time.
It was also a bit confusing in determining weather to react to the timing of the voice, or the timing of the instructor, or the timing of your own character. My own character didn't reflect my timing or even my moves. Following the instructor wasn't the correct timing either. It was the voice timing, or sometimes a graphic such as a measuring stick that needs to be obeyed for accuracy.
So, I found it overall inaccurate and very slow. When it comes down to it, I'd rather work out to traditional exercise videos. The pace is faster and keeps my heart rate up, and no time is lost to technical difficulties.

Customer Review: Great workout

I've been using both Gold's Gym and Wii fit. While Gold's Gym is more limited in scope, it provides a much better aerobic workout. The boxing is fun and easy to do. If I want to get a real workout, I'll always grab this title over wii fit. The one downside to this title is the horrible music that's included. They have musac style covers of a handful of songs. This game would be really incredible if they'd included a decent soundtrack. Overall I'd definitely recommend it.

Customer Review: THIS is the workout GAME I was hoping for!
Summary: 5 Stars

Gold's Gym Cardio Boxing has been a fun title to workout with. I enjoy the boxing and it really helps me break a sweat. It's not hard on the knees, as others have mentioned and it has improved my overall energy and willingness to continue working out. Having owned EA Sports Active and Wii Fit, this is the game I prefer and keep going back to everytime. I enjoyed the boxing in Wii Fit but the balance board just isn't that big of a deal to me. This game uses the balance board but that is not why I bought it. I bought it because being a former athlete I enjoy sports and this is the closest of the workout games to actually training.

Pros: Workouts can be selected for you by your trainer or you can do A La Carte and select only what you want to do. I use trainer "Nina" and usually have her prepare me a workout. I get the choice of intensity as well as location & music. You can even re-arrange the order of this workout to make it easier or harder on yourself. You always have the option of building your own workout by selecting from the various exercises. Personally I go thru a "hardcore" workout and then go back and do a basic punching (jabs & crosses) with 3lb. hand gloves on, then hit the sand bag or jump rope. There is an option to use the balance board if you desire to do so and others have explained that in their reviews, so I won't touch on it here. Again this is an easier game on the knees and lower back than some others I have tried and it is keeping my interest. It charts your punch totals so you can see how you did in comparison to past workouts. There are also unlockables like shirts, pants, shoes, gloves, new trainers and outfits for them. While it might not matter much to some, I have to admit it does give me a feeling of accomplishment once I have completed an exercise and unlocked something.

Cons: Nothing major. As with any Wii game, it doesn't always register your movements. It does get frustrating when you're 65% through an exercise and a "MISS" scrolls up the screen even though you threw the punch. This is to be expected though so I can't complain too much. The in-game music is OK. I do like the fact that an instrumental version of "Eye of the Tiger" is in there, however not having an option to have my own music played during the workout is a gripe I have with all the workout games I have tried. (I know what pumps me up and everyone else knows what pumps them up as well, so please just allow us to play our own music during the game. Please don't tell me it can't be done because it can. Nintendo did it in Excite Truck and it makes that game tons more fun for me.) This complaint is minor though, since most of the workout games have the same minor flaws and you can turn the music off and play your own through any music device you prefer.

Overall this has been the best of the workout games for my taste in working out. I do recommend that if you want something a little more intense, buy yourself some weighted hand gloves to increase the difficulty and get more out of the workouts. I will also recommend a headband or skullcap to keep the sweat out of your eyes.
