Video Game Reviews of Wii SurvivorCustomer Review: Poor representation of the show Summary: 1 Stars
I've seen every Survivor episode since Season 2, so I picked up this game since I never miss an episode. The manual isn't great, I thought it could've explained things better, but maybe since I know how the show works, I was expecting things to operate like the show. I'm reviewing the 1 player game.
There are 16 Survivors, and they are real people who've been on Survivor. Some who are familiar faces and others who aren't. I have no idea how they selected these 16. The game starts as you pick one of the two eight person tribes. Timbira has: Kathy, Colby, Boston Rob, Earl, Ian, Twila, Cirie, Amber. Jalapao has Tom, Brian, Sandra, Stephanie, Denise, Kelly, Austin, Yul. Tina is not playable but is the person who shows you how to move the remote to play the challenges. Then you pick one of the eight members to play in a reward challenge. If you win a reward challenge you get a reward. I won a fruit basket, a barbecue. It's supposed to help you in the immunity challenge, but I don't know how. Each tribe member has a list of three challenges that they excel at. The challenges are all mini-games that have you to wave/move the Wii Remote or Nunchuk in motions that make you paddle through water, shoot at an archery-like target, run a long jump like in the Olympics, etc. After the reward challenge you pick a tribe member for an immunity challenge. Again, a mini-game will take place. Whoever wins the immunity challenge wins immunity for their tribe. Now tribal council takes place. This is where the game greatly fails and here's why:
My first tribal council, I lost immunity. My tribe is at tribal council. I'm expecting to be able to write a name down on the parchment and vote for someone (remember, the manual is horrible). But, I don't get to vote. The game cuts to one person who is singled out to leave the game. So, my tribe goes from 8 to 7 members. I lose the next two immunity challenges, and again, no voting, one person is singled out to leave. Down to 5 members. I'm wondering why I'm not able to vote. This horrible manual isn't telling me anything. I now win the next immunity challenge. The game cuts to tribal council with the other team sitting there. NOW, I get to vote. I get to pick one person from the other tribe to leave the game. THIS IS NOT THE WAY SURVIVOR IS PLAYED. In real Survivor, tribes vote amongst themselves, not for the other tribe. If they win immunity, they don't go to tribal council to cast one collective vote for someone on the other tribe. So, I vote for someone, and get them down to 7, I still have 5. Coincidentally, there's no real reason to vote for someone unless you look at what they tell you the next challenge will be, and vote off the person who may have that as one of their three strongpoints. I eventually got the other tribe down to 4 members, with me at 5 members. Then I lost 5 immunity challenges in a row, and lost all my members. So, the other tribe has 4 members to my 0. The game says "game over". Game Over? But, who's the Sole Survivor? No one, because the object of the Wii Survivor game is just to win 8 immunity challenges before the other team does.
I'm ok with the challenges being mini-games, although some were very difficult. Here's some things the game doesn't have, that it needs to have if it wants to really call itself Survivor:
--There is absolutely no interaction with your tribemates. A big part of Survivor is alliances, but you'll find no opportunity to make any here. Let me click on a teammate, and have some multiple choice questions for them, and try to form an alliance with them.
--There's no merge. You might think there is, but there's not. At about 8 or 9 people left, you get a cut scene to Probst saying that "you've made it to the merge". After he says this, the game goes right to the next challenge, with exactly the same TWO tribes as they were before Probst announcement. I believe "Merge" means both tribes are now one, but not in this game.
--When someone gets voted out, Probst doesn't should always say "The tribe has spoken". He says "the tribe has voted unanimously, their decision is final". He doesn't say that on the show.
--Probst correctly snuffs out the torch, but the torch should be a big torch that you put into the ground, not the size of the Statue of Liberty torch or an Olympic torch.
I played again, winning enough challenges to eliminate all the other tribe members. I had 5 members left on my team. Probst tells me I'm the Sole Survivor. That's funny, there's 5 people still in the game. So, there's no jury.
This game is just a bunch of mini-games trying to capitalize on the Survivor name. They got Probst's real voice in the game, and some character models of past Survivors, but there's not much else. Especially after you play through it once.
