Video Game Reviews of Repair Replacement - Part Laser Lens for Nintendo Wii ConsoleCustomer Review: Instructions are readily available on Youtube Summary: 5 Stars
My 4 year old Wii was giving constant Read Errors no matter what disc I was trying to run. At first it was just a disc or two that did it, but even after multiple lens cleanings they all started giving errors. All of the non-disc functions (like wii ware, internet browsing, etc) worked fine. Those are symptoms of a bad laser lens. Note that if your disc does not spin or if the disc is not detected by the system, you are probably looking at replacing the entire DVD drive (about $60). The laser lens is just one tiny piece of the entire drive assembly.
It's true that this laser lens does not come with any screwdrivers or instructions, but the instructions are easily found on Youtube, walking you step by step through the replacement. Total time took me about 1 hour - and I'm an engineer. There are about a dozen screws of various sizes you need to remove in a specific order, tiny cables to disconnect, and metal housings to pry up. It's NOT an easy task for someone with no experience. There are a couple of steps where you can break things or otherwise permanently damage your DVD drive.
The tools you will need include a very tiny "tri-blade" screwdriver, readily available at Amazon for about $5. You'll also need a very tiny philips head screwdriver and a "spudger" used to pry certain things. A spudger is just a really tiny spatula. I ordered a complete screwdriver kit and spudger from [...]. Those tools cost me about $25, but they can be used to repair iPhones and PS3s. Laser Lenses cost upwards of $35 at ifixit.com.
One important point about the Laser lens I received: there is a tiny solder spot on the flexible circuit board that needs to be unsoldered (not bridging two adjacent traces). The unit I received had this bridge already desoldered. This was a very good thing, since I didn't relish the idea of heating that flexible circuit board with a soldering iron. On the other hand, most NEW laser lenses are shipped with the solder bridge intact (I guess they leave the factory in test mode). So that may mean I was sold a used unit??? I will assume it's new (as advertised). There's no way I can tell; it just came in a small ziplock bag.
Also, as with just about all Wii lasers you buy on line, it did not come with the white assembly that screws to it; you will need to remove it from your assembly and screw it to the new one (videos will show how that works).
Anyway, after an hour of hard work my Wii is once again reading discs perfectly.
